A Moment of Recognition: From Recovery Work to Buckingham Palace

To say I was surprised would be an understatement. This wasn’t just a prestigious event; it was a powerful reminder that the work we do, often behind the scenes and far from the spotlight, truly matters.
As I stepped through the grand gates of Buckingham Palace, leaving behind the familiar world of Surrey and London prisons, I was met with an almost surreal scene. The lawns were perfectly manicured, the sky an uninterrupted expanse of blue, and the air filled with the hum of polite conversation and distant laughter. The chaos and intensity of day-to-day life, supporting individuals on the long and often painful journey of recovery, suddenly felt very far away.
Under a canopy of blooming wisteria, I found a quiet spot to reflect with a cup of tea in hand (though I must confess—Earl Grey isn’t quite for me!). It was in this moment, surrounded by beauty and tranquillity, that a wave of humility washed over me.
This invitation wasn’t just to enjoy an afternoon in a royal garden; it was recognition. Recognition for the work I do with The Forward Trust, supporting teams across the prison estate who are committed to helping people overcome addiction and reclaim their lives. The daily reality of this work is often unseen, full of challenges, and emotionally demanding. To have that contribution acknowledged in this way felt surreal, moving in a way I hadn’t anticipated.
The journey home was a quiet one. I remember the taste of jam and sunshine still lingering from the afternoon’s delights. But more than anything, I remember feeling deeply grateful. Grateful for the opportunity, yes, but more so for the reminder of why I do this work in the first place.
That day at the palace was more than just a break from routine. It was a powerful affirmation. A moment of stillness and celebration that reminded me, and I hope, by sharing this, reminds others, how vital and transformative our work can be.
To my incredible colleagues and everyone at The Forward Trust: thank you. For your support, your belief, and for making moments like this possible. Let’s keep going. Because every life we help turn around is a story worthy of recognition.
